Suitcase in Point Theatre Company will bring the majesty of Niagara Falls to stage in a workshop presentation of their newest collaborative project, Barrel Crank, written by Governor-General award winning playwright Erin Shields. The workshop presentation will take place at the Sullivan Mahoney Courthouse Theatre in downtown St. Catharines from February 10 – 12 2012.

Barrel Crank illuminates the physical magnitude of the falls and the ever-present human desire to conquer it. The framing narrative is the story of Annie Edson Taylor – the first person to go over the falls in a barrel in 1901. Clown turns, vaudeville acts, souvenir tap dances, and live video feed from within a barrel itself help create a world that embodies the spectacle, depravity and utter contradiction of Niagara Falls.

Suitcase in Point has been developing Barrel Crank for nearly two seasons and is excited to share the culmination of their work so far.  This interdisciplinary piece has brought together a stellar team of artists under the direction of Rose Plotek and features Suitcase in Point’s Deanna Jones and Natasha Pedros, along with performers Frank Cox-O’Connell and Amy Nostbakken. It incorporates innovative sound design by Suitcase in Point’s Joe Lapinski, multi-media design by Ernest Harris Jr, and the barrel making skills of local carpenter Jeff Ott.

“It’s been incredible to work through this creation process with new and old friends, involving our design team, actors, director and playwright every step of the way,” says Jones. “Barrel Crank is poised to bring Suitcase in Point to new heights in the Canadian theatre scene. This special project has been years in the making and we’re eager to gather impressions as we prepare for the full ride of production.”

Audiences will be encouraged to provide feedback at facilitated talk-back sessions following the workshop presentations.
